Blue Dragon’s emergency response to recent flooding in northern and north-central Vietnam

On July 22, Tropical Storm Wipha devastated communities in north-central Vietnam, flooding villages and causing landslides.
Many regions close to Hanoi faced blackouts caused by strong winds, but the capital city came through largely unscathed. Our centre remains open, and Blue Dragon children and families are safe in our care.
But in mountainous areas close to Laos, such as Nghe An province where Blue Dragon is working to prevent human trafficking, the damage has been extensive. Roads and bridges have been damaged and washed away in the floods, making it extremely challenging to access the affected communities to provide emergency aid and get people to safety.
Blue Dragon immediately travelled to the worst hit areas, assessing the damage and getting people to safety. Homes were crushed and entire villages were submerged in floodwater, making them only accessible by boat.
After the immediate danger cleared, we began delivering food and supplies to people who had lost everything. So far, we have delivered hundreds of food packages including staples like rice, water and cooking oil.
One family we are helping is Hao’s. Hao, her husband and their two-year-old son escaped without injury, but their house was swept away in the flooding – along with everything they owned.
Hao and her husband had taken out a loan to build the house just last year. Now that it’s been destroyed, they have no money to pay the loans back, let alone enough to build a new home.
Right now, Blue Dragon is providing them with nutritious food while they take shelter in the home of a family member.
As the scale of the damage continues to unfold, we will keep giving food, supplies and hope to families like Hao’s who live in communities so remote that there are precious few lifelines they can rely on.
Blue Dragon will be there. Just like after Typhoon Yagi tore through northern Vietnam last year, we will rebuild people’s lives stronger and more resilient than before together with our incredible global community.
