What is the legal age of marriage in Vietnam? All 23 students in a high school in remote northern Vietnam could answer the question correctly – 20 for boys and 18 for girls. However, when asked at the workshop organised by Blue Dragon what they would do if they were asked to get married before that age, they fell silent. Up to 30% of students in this area who start high school drop out for various reasons, including to get married. Most are from ethnic minority backgrounds where early marriage is the norm. They believe that the law applies to ‘others in Vietnam’ but not to them.
The aim was to raise awareness that they will be breaking the law by doing so. The students now realise that the law also applies to them too. Blue Dragon will continue to work to change mindsets so children can complete their education.
