Workshop on ‘Ngon’ & Suicide Prevention

November 17, 2016
Blue Dragon discovered that the suicide rate in some communities where children are supported by the organisation is higher than average. There are two reasons for this – the lack of life skills in dealing with stress, and the easy availability of ‘ngon’.  This is a plant that grows readily and can be found along roads and mountain paths. Children chew the leaves when they think they cannot solve a problem, or when they get into a fight with their parents. Ingesting the leaves causes nausea, paralysis and death. Blue Dragon held a workshop involving 50 students and 60 parents to discuss the issue. Parents were encouraged to interact more constructively with their children to handle conflicts, and all were urged to bring victims immediately to the medical station if a case of poisoning is suspected.
